The study's lead researcher, Oscar Wilson, notes that the abundance of prey in the region meant that mammalian predators couldn't have consumed all the available food. Instead, crocodylians, particularly Purussaurus, were the primary predators, especially when it came to hunting large herbivores.
The fossils revealed a wide variety of herbivores, including giant ground sloths, glyptodonts, and ungulates that could weigh over a tonne.
